Love Ex Machina

On the day of the memorial service of Stefanos’s father, Dimitra shows up unexpectedly. They soon start talking about Sophia. From the very first moments, Stephanos revisits his first encounter with Sophia, at a bookstore. His intense love for her becomes immediately apparent to Dimitra who believes that Sophia is destroying him. She tries in a gentle – at first – and then persistent manner to show him that he must get away from her. She points out that his devotion and obsession with her, has caused him to leave his job at the accounting office and alienate himself from everything, remaining alone. He flatly refuses to abandon Sophia and explains to Dimitra that there is no way out and that he must continue. She insists that this is a matter of will.
It then becomes apparent that Stephanos and Dimitra used to be a couple and that he yearns for them to be reunited. As for Sophia, it is revealed that she is not an ordinary love partner, but rather the subject of the book that Stephanos is writing: Sophia is a fictional character as well as the title of his book.
Dimitra insists, for the last time, that he needs to leave Sophia and as a result quit writing, thus indicating that this is what stands between them. He sits with her and tells her a story about his father. He loved the theatre but in order to start a family, he found a safe job which made him very unhappy. With this, Stefanos makes it clear to her that he would not like to give up what he loves. She understands and accepts his passion for writing, only she does not wish to be part of it and thus she leaves. Stefanos is left alone with his sweet lover, Sophia.
